Unleashed Recomp Android reached version 0.6.0 on September 30, 2026, with an important change for mobile phones and handhelds: users can now choose where to store the game, including on SD cards and mounted volumes. The update also improves DLC installation, fixes collision bugs, and tackles a cause of crashes known as the "ring crash".
The project runs the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Unleashed through static recompilation for ARM64. Therefore, it is not console emulation, streaming, or running the Windows binary via Winlator. The app compiles and adapts the game code for Android, while the Vulkan renderer works with the device's own drivers or compatible packages.
The release distributes an APK for sideload installation. However, it does not include the game. The user must provide the files from their own legally acquired copy of Sonic Unleashed for Xbox 360.
Unleashed Recomp Android 0.6.0 improves DLC installation
Version 0.6.0 fixes the import of additional content after the base game is already installed. The app now accepts folders and ZIP files containing only DLC, as well as packages that remained in the directory to_install after attempts made by previous versions.
Before replacing existing content, the installer verifies hashes in a temporary tree. Additionally, the system maintains a recovery route in case the swap is interrupted. The change reduces the risk of losing a working installation while including new packages.
The launcher also now accepts HMM JSON schemas with trailing commas, comments, and a UTF-8 byte order mark. When the schema presents an error, the log stops dumping the entire file, which improves report privacy.

SD card enters storage options
Another new feature is the persistent choice of file location. The app lists internal memory, app-private folders, and directories Android/media in mounted volumes, including SD cards compatible with the device.
The user can copy games, mods, settings, and saves to the new destination. The copy is verified and preserves the original files. Still, the developer recommends completely closing the app before changing storage after a session.
If an SD card is selected, it must remain available when the game is launched. In addition, the feature does not turn any slow card into an ideal solution; speed and stability remain dependent on the device and the media used.
Fix with memmove addresses ring crash and collisions
The most relevant technical change is in overlapping memory copies. The port now uses memmove in these cases, instead of an improper operation for overlapping regions.
According to the changelog, the fix resolves corruption associated with the “ring crash” and also broken collision triggers. With the cause identified, the project removed the small block quarantines and other workarounds used in previous versions.
Despite this, the team maintains the port as experimental. Results may vary depending on the Android version, GPU, Vulkan driver, and device model. Therefore, the release should not be described as guaranteed compatible with every ARM64 phone.
An individual report shows the port running on a Motorola Edge 2025 with a Dimensity 7400 and 8 GB of RAM. The result does not represent all devices.
Android 10, ARM64, and Vulkan remain mandatory
The current README requires Android 10 or higher and a 64-bit processor. The application targets ARM64 and uses Vulkan. Therefore, 32-bit devices and devices without a proper Vulkan implementation are out of the current scope.
The main development targets are Adreno 710, 725, 732, and 750 GPUs. Adreno 720 and 722 appear in the included driver, but still need further testing. Other Adreno 6xx and 7xx models may work, although the project does not promise compatibility.
Recent Mali GPUs receive experimental support through the system's Vulkan driver. The project cites the Valhall generation and models such as G610, G615, G710, G715, and G720. A Dimensity 8300 Ultra with Mali-G615 appears as confirmed hardware. On the other hand, older Mali generations, such as Bifrost and earlier, do not meet the documented requirements.
PowerVR and Samsung Xclipse remain without broad validation. In the case of Xclipse, the system uses the device driver by default and allows testing compatible community packages, but this does not equate to guaranteed support.
Port offers touch, gamepad, and Portuguese interface
The touch overlay includes analog sticks, action buttons, triggers, and camera control. In menus, the virtual directional pad changes to an eight-way D-pad. During cutscenes, the interface can reduce the controls to a skip button.
The user can also move and resize the controls across the screen. Furthermore, Bluetooth and USB gamepads recognized by SDL can take over input; in this case, the touch overlay disappears until the screen receives a touch again.
The application interface features Portuguese, English, Russian, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Version 0.6.0 completes missing translations in areas such as mods, updates, storage selection, and installer messages.

Options help weaker devices
By default, Android uses a 50% resolution scale, disables anti-aliasing and motion blur, and applies 4× anisotropic filtering. The configuration aims to reduce initial overhead without requiring external packages.
The menu also allows lowering the scale to 25%, capping the framerate at 30 FPS, reducing shadows to 256, and turning off planar reflections. Additionally, texture quality can be dropped to half or a quarter of the original resolution, reducing memory usage and bandwidth.
These options improve the chances of running on more modest hardware, but do not guarantee stable performance. The project does not provide a complete FPS-per-SoC table and acknowledges that artifacts, crashes, and audio issues may still occur.
There is no version for iPhone or iPad
The 0.6.0 release distributes an APK for Android. There is no IPA, App Store, TestFlight, or official build for iOS or iPadOS. There is also no documented Metal version in this fork.
Consequently, streaming videos of Sonic Unleashed on iPhone, emulation, or other layers do not represent this project. Unleashed Recomp Android remains targeted at ARM64, Android 10+, and Vulkan.
Update keeps the port separate from the PC version
The fork derives from Unleashed Recompiled for PC, but adds its own Android integration, mobile storage, touch controls, drivers, and APK installation.
This difference also separates the project from solutions that run the Windows binary via a compatibility layer. By comparison, other recent native ports, such as the Wind Waker's BlueWake for iPhone and iPad, follow different pipelines and graphics APIs.
With version 0.6.0, the most important advancement is not in a new visual effect. The release strengthens daily use by fixing memory and collisions, making DLCs easier, and allowing large installations to be moved from internal memory to an SD card.
