Mercenaries Recompiled received a public release on September 26, 2026, and finally allows running Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, from 2005, directly on Windows without using an Xbox emulator. The project recompiles the original console version's executable into a native PC program, requires the user to provide their own copy of the game, and can also run on Linux via Proton.
The release represents a major breakthrough for the technical preservation of the Pandemic Studios classic. In addition to bringing the game to PC, the recompilation adds modern options, fixes, and development tools without replacing the original title's commercial data.
Mercenaries Recompiled transforms the Xbox executable
The author, known as KraftMacAndChee, explained that the project starts from the actual Xbox version executable and recompiles it to generate a native Windows executable. Therefore, it is not PCSX2, xemu, or another traditional emulation layer.
At the same time, the team makes an important distinction: the program is not a standalone game. The user still needs to provide the Xbox edition data. The recompilation package does not include the commercial assets of Mercenaries.

This method places the project in the same technical movement as other recent recompilations. Allves Games followed, for example, how The Darkness Recomp advanced in the graphical reconstruction of the Xbox 360 version. We also showcase Conker Recompiled, which brings the Nintendo 64 classic to modern systems.
Port offers 4K, widescreen and up to 60 FPS
According to tests published after launch, the PC version supports widescreen monitors, resolution up to 4K and an option to raise the frame rate limit to 60 FPS. The port also supports keyboard and mouse, although current reports indicate that the mouse works during gameplay and not in menus.
In addition, there is a setting capable of increasing the distance at which NPCs become active. This option aims to reduce distant characters displayed in simplified poses or states before full activation.

These features are optional. The developer states that the core of the game remains equivalent to the Xbox edition and that the user can play without the additional enhancements. Thus, the proposal combines the preservation of the original behavior with modern adjustments that can be enabled according to preference.
Developer menu includes tools and adjustments
Initial disclosures called the additional interface a "mod menu". Later, the author himself clarified that it is actually a developer menu used during testing and bug fixes. It is disabled by default and can be enabled via the file developer.ini.
The demonstrations show tools such as free camera and features used to create situations with NPCs and vehicles. In addition, the project offers graphical improvements and fixes for issues present in the original game.
Broader mod support is still evolving. The team intends to expand compatibility with major community projects, including PoD+. Therefore, this part should be treated as work in progress, not as a finished modding layer.

Linux works via Proton and Android is not in the plans
On Windows, Mercenaries Recompiled runs as a native program. On Linux, the community documents usage through Proton. This means the Linux version should not be described as a separate native Linux port.
Questions also arose about Android. In the project discussions, the published response was that development is focused on PC. So far, there is no announcement of an APK, ARM64 version, mobile backend, or official build for Android or iOS.
A user also reported a Steam Deck session at 1080p close to 60 FPS using Proton. However, this result is an individual community test and not an official benchmark. The report does not provide complete methodology, exact Proton version, nor detailed frametime measurements.
Mercenaries Recompiled requires the original copy
To work, the tool needs to recognize the data of the correct Xbox edition. The team recommends that the user dump their own media. The project does not distribute ISOs, full games, or proprietary assets.
This separation also explains why recompilation does not replace the commercial game. The software provides the necessary layer to run the recompiled code and apply its features on the PC, while the protected data continues to come from the user's copy.
Finally, the public release turns a demonstration into a usable option to preserve and play the first Mercenaries on modern hardware. The project is still expected to receive work on mods and documentation, but the main milestone has already happened: the Xbox version can now run on Windows via recompilation, without relying on conventional emulation.
