Pokémon 3D Now Runs on Any Potato: The PotatoVoxel Mod Has Arrived for Low-End PCs and Phones

Imagine playing the first-generation Pokémon classics — Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow — in a stunning 3D world, without your phone melting in your hand or your PC suffering from bizarre freezes. This is the new reality thanks to Gen1Recomp working in conjunction with the newly released PotatoVoxel Mod.

Until now, running Pokémon in 3D natively required decent hardware. Previous mods, while impressive, could cause lag spikes, excessive battery consumption, and FPS drops on more modest smartphones and low-cost handhelds. To solve this, the community has created a version 100% focused on performance and optimization.

Check out the video below to see how simple it is to set up the base project on your Android before applying the mods:

How does PotatoVoxel save your "potato phone"?

The PotatoVoxel is a direct modification of the original Dramatic Shape Mod, but rewritten for low-end devices. It doesn't promise a magical frame rate (FPS), but it applies aggressive optimizations to ensure the game runs smoothly without stuttering. The main improvements include:

  • POTATO mode by default: The game renders the 3D scene at just 33% of the original resolution and then upscales it to the screen. The visuals look slightly more pixelated (which actually fits the retro aesthetic), but the relief on your phone's GPU is massive.
  • Load distribution: Instead of loading giant chunks of scenery and freezing your game for a few seconds, the mod generates the 3D mesh gradually, distributed across frames.
  • Cutting the excess: Costly effects, such as realistic water, complex forests, anti-aliasing, and detailed shadows, come disabled by default. All for the sake of performance.
  • Prebuild Map Cache: In the options menu (OPTIONS), you can ask the game to pre-render all maps and save them to storage. This way, when you change cities, the transition will be instantaneous, without requiring real-time processing.

Pokémon 100% in Brazilian Portuguese

Even when playing in performance-focused mode, you don't have to give up immersion. The community has already developed a PT-BR Translation Mod. This translation integrates seamlessly with the Gen1Recomp touch interface and does not affect PotatoVoxel's performance, ensuring that the entire journey and Pokédex descriptions can be enjoyed in our language.

How to install and play (Android, iOS and PC)

Remember: to keep everything legal, the project requires you to provide your own ROM (game file) dumped from your original cartridge.

  • On Android/iOS: After downloading and opening Gen1Recomp, point it to your Game Boy ROM. Then, access the menu MODS > Import mod .zip in-game and select the PotatoVoxel file. Restart the application. If you were using another 3D mod (such as the original Dramatic Shape), disable or delete it from the manager, as they conflict.
  • On PC (Windows/Linux): The process follows the same logic. Copy the extracted mod folder to the directory mods/ from Gen1Recomp. PotatoVoxel fully supports desktop use and offers an excellent option for older computers and laptops.

For those who want to see the detailed installation process on the computer, the video below shows how native integration works on PC:

If you have trouble finding the mods folder, encounter any errors with the map cache, or want to report a visual bug, the Devs' Discord (link in the buttons) is the best community to ask for quick and friendly support.
