Have you ever wondered why some "modified" games have something else instead of the PS1 logo in the opening? It all started a few years after the launch of the PS1 in 1994, when groups crackers, like Paradox and Kalisto, focused on breaking down security methods on the PS1 and its games. They used tools to access the files and change the PS1 logo at startup, as well as the license text. This was a way to credit the authorship of the person who modified or pirated a game. However, since these visual changes are very subtle, they would not interfere with the game's startup.
The logo and license text that we see at the opening of the PlayStation are in the first sectors of the game disc, and not in the console's BIOS.
In order to authenticate that everything was correct in reading the CD, these visual files were required to be present on the disc.
This is similar to the Nintendo logo that appears at the beginning of Game Boy games. This logo was present on the ROM of each cartridge.
Now you know better why the PS1 logo might not appear on the screen when you insert a "modified" disc.
The same happens when you insert an incompatible or damaged disc. The console's BIOS will not be able to find the necessary files inside the CD, and that is why the PS1 logo will not appear.
But, is there any mystery when the PS1 logo appears normally?
In 2021, several websites reported that the PlayStation logo we see in the opening is not a simple image, but a 3D model. This information was brought by a Twitter user named @SkuttlePunk, and right below @Lilith.Zip responded by showing the manipulation of the 3D logo.

However, the surprise for some might be that even though it has a 3D look, it is not a simple image file, but rather a rotatable 3D model.
