Medabots AX reached 100% matching decompilation on October 5, 2026. The project reconstructs the Metabee and Rokusho versions of the Game Boy Advance game in C and is able to generate binaries matching the original when the user provides their own ROM. Furthermore, the author has already brought the codebase to WebAssembly and demonstrated 2v2 battles with four human players.

The milestone is significant because it concludes the main code reconstruction phase and opens the door for studies, modifications, and new porting work. However, the repository does not distribute ROMs, graphics, music, or other game assets. Therefore, anyone wishing to compile the codebase must use their own legally acquired copy of Medabots AX.

Medabots AX achieves matching code in both versions

According to the project's documentation, the Metabee version uses the North American edition identified as AK8E as its reference. Meanwhile, the Rokusho edition is built from the same code tree, with specific differences handled separately. As a result, the work avoids maintaining two independent codebases for nearly identical games.

The README also explains that compilation depends on agbcc, a tool used in other Game Boy Advance decompilation projects. Next, the comparison command checks whether the result matches the expected binary. Thus, "100%" here does not just mean that the game appears to work: the technical objective is to reproduce the original code in a matching way.

The author states that about 1,700 functions were organized into approximately 60 files by subsystem. In addition, thousands of functions, globals, and struct fields received more readable names during the process. Part of these names is still interpretive and may receive corrections from the community.

WebAssembly turns decompilation into a browser experience

After completing the reconstruction, the developer compiled the codebase to WebAssembly. This step allows running the work in a modern browser, although the main repository remains a decompilation and does not distribute the game's protected data. Therefore, the experience depends on legitimate files provided by the user themselves.

The demo also received specific changes for multiplayer. According to the author's report, the 2v2 mode supports four real people instead of filling out the teams with CPU-controlled partners. Furthermore, the leader rule was removed in this variant: defeating only the opposing leader does not end the battle, and it is necessary to defeat both team members.

The netcode system is still evolving. The project uses matchmaking and lobbies, and the author is working on player-hosted lobbies to reduce reliance on a distant server. Consequently, the proposal goes beyond simply recompiling the original game and begins experimenting with new ways to play Medabots AX.

AI was used in the matching process

The developer also publicly stated the use of Claude agents during the matching stage. According to him, the agents worked on functions, generated C code, and compared the result with the ROM before accepting changes. The author estimates that this phase took about two and a half days, although he points out that the workflow was only tested on this project and may still require adjustments.

This information is important to contextualize the method, but it does not change the technical matching criterion used by the project. In other words, each snippet needs to go through the comparison outlined by the build process. Even so, names, organization, and maintenance decisions remain subject to human and community review.

Decompilation is not the same as distributing the game

The repository makes it clear that it contains neither ROM nor assets of Medabots AX. To compile, it is necessary to provide your own legally acquired copy. Therefore, there is no official installable package that justifies a download button for the port at this time.

The progress follows a recent trend in technical preservation projects. Allves Games covered, for example, when Super Mario Galaxy reached 100% decompilation and when the reconstructed codebase of Star Fox Adventures paved the way for the native Foxhollow port. In the case of Medabots AX, WebAssembly and multiplayer already show practical possibilities created on top of code reconstruction.

For now, the 100% milestone mainly represents a complete technical foundation for Metabee and Rokusho. The evolution of multiplayer, eventual ports, and new modifications will depend on the next stages of the project.
