The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers gets native port for PC and Linux in version 1.5

The project The Two Towers on PC has received new native recompilation builds for Windows and Linux, with progress recorded up to version 1.5. The experimental adaptation starts from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, released for the original Xbox in 2002, and requires your own copy of the game.

On October 8, 2026, developer Gumpolas was already documenting version 1.2. However, the official README of TooTawersRecomp now features version 1.5, which fixes extra character attacks. Therefore, the article includes the most recent progress, without confusing an experimental mod update with the completion of the entire port.

The Two Towers on PC works with static recompilation

The project converts Xbox code for native execution on current PCs. Thus, the user does not launch the title inside a traditional Xbox emulator. However, the compatibility layer still reproduces graphics, audio, and controller features necessary for operation.

According to the documentation, the game is playable, but may crash or freeze in specific sections. The author recommends playing at 30 FPS, a rate the original used natively. Therefore, 60 FPS and widescreen remain experimental, and some effects may be misaligned.

Additionally, the port receives keyboard, Xbox, and PlayStation controller inputs, with visual adaptations. On Linux x64, the README mentions OpenGL and compatible library requirements; whereas the README cites the Steam Deck in desktop mode. The Allves Games team did not test the installation themselves.

The Two Towers on PC: what changed in version 1.5?

Update 1.5 focuses on the optional mod Extra heroes, which the game keeps disabled by default. According to Gumpolas, Boromir and Frodo's strikes were deviating from the characters' direction, and the author has now corrected the direction of these attacks.

The developer recorded measurements at Hornburg Courtyard to compare hit frequencies. However, these numbers are the author's local tests, not evidence of a complete campaign tested by third parties. The mod may feature incomplete animations, voices, and effects.

Previously, version 1.3 had expanded the animations and equipment of additional heroes, such as Boromir, Gandalf, Frodo, and Lurtz. Even so, the team recommends restarting the application in case of crashes and reports occasional errors in cutscenes and widescreen effects.

Windows and Linux require their own copy of the game

The repository offers official build and distribution files for Windows x64 and Linux x86_64. However, it does not distribute the commercial work: the user needs the ISO or an extracted folder from the North American Xbox edition, extracted from their own legally acquired copy.

The general procedure is to extract the compatible package, specify the location of the game files, and launch the launcher. Meanwhile, those already using a previous version can preserve the folder game_files, saves, and settings when updating. Always consult the official releases before following specific instructions.

Pending installation buttons: the friendly Windows and Linux routes remain without recording on the site. The platform refused the previous recording of the Windows route due to a security check before reaching the tool. Therefore, this draft informs about official availability, but does not display download buttons that might point to unvalidated destinations.

How does the port stand compared to other Xbox projects?

The The Two Towers port is part of the recent interest in recompiling console titles for PC. For example, the experimental Xbox Breakdown port has its own limitations and does not serve as proof that The Two Towers is fully functional.

Likewise, the King Kong Recompiled follows another development. The availability of releases for two operating systems does not replace campaign validation, stability, or compatibility across all computers.

The captions identify the historical Xbox captures as images of the original game, rather than the port. The README also features its own screenshots, but their current URLs redirect to a destination that the media importer does not accept; therefore, they were not included in the article.
