Super Mario Maker 2 received its first public native port version for Windows, Linux, and macOS. The independent project SMM2 Recomp released version 0.2.0 on October 20, 2026, featuring the 100 Mario Challenge mode, community server course access, and performance improvements. The packages do not include the game: each user must provide the files from their own copy.

The initiative uses static recompilation of the Nintendo Switch code and a native environment with Vulkan or Metal graphics. However, the project is still in development, and the existence of downloads does not equate to confirmation of functionality on all computers.

Super Mario Maker 2 on PC: what works

According to the official version 0.2.0 patch notes, SMM2 Recomp allows running courses and using the editor on already implemented stages. In addition, it incorporates the 100 Mario Challenge from the first Super Mario Maker, featuring difficulty selection, a map, and an ending sequence.

The project also offers an alternative Course World, supported by an independent server, which can work with community courses or the TGRCode public archive. Thus, this functionality does not depend on official Nintendo servers. However, online multiplayer is still planned; not to be confused with browsing and downloading levels.

Among the 0.2.0 adjustments are ahead-of-time and parallel shader compilation, which aims to reduce stuttering when encountering new effects, thumbnails, and course maps, and two mods inspired by the first Mario Maker. The experimental frame generation can produce output of up to 120 FPS on compatible monitors, while the game logic remains at 60 FPS. This is not actual 120 FPS logic execution.

How to download Super Mario Maker 2 for Windows, Mac, and Linux

The developer provides four packages on official download page. The files are a launcher with a recompiler; they do not contain the game, nor system files, firmware, or third-party keys.

  1. Choose the version 0.2.0 package for your operating system below and download the file directly from the official release.
  1. Extract the package into a folder where you have write permission and open the corresponding launcher.
  2. In the initial setup, select the files from your own copy of Super Mario Maker 2 with update 3.0.3 and the necessary files obtained from your own console, as per the project documentation.
  3. Select the prepare and play option. Initial recompilation takes place on the computer itself and can take anywhere from a few minutes to about half an hour, according to the author.

The links above point to the confirmed files for version 0.2.0 and are not automatic redirects to future versions. Check the releases page for subsequent updates. No Android or iOS packages were published in this release; on these platforms, the project only notes the possibility of compiling from source code.

Port requirements and limitations

On 64-bit Windows 10/11, the author requires an AVX2-compatible CPU and a Vulkan 1.3 graphics driver. On Linux, the x64 and ARM64 builds require SDL3 3.2 or higher and Vulkan 1.3; the x64 edition also needs AVX2. On macOS, the package is targeted at Apple Silicon with macOS 15 or later and is not notarized.

The project README still displays an old notice that there are no releases, but the releases page confirms the public files from October 20th. Therefore, the releases page is the most current reference for package availability.

The project is unofficial, with no association with Nintendo. The developers themselves report limitations in fidelity and compatibility, especially on platforms that have not yet received full testing on real hardware. We did not perform independent testing of installation, FPS, or game completion in this report.
