Road Rash 64 Recompiled 1.4.2 was released on September 29, 2026 with Mario Kart 64 items on imported tracks, a bonus chapter after the campaign ends, positional audio for rival engines, and new fixes for online multiplayer. The version continues to use static recompilation with N64Recomp and RT64, therefore it does not run the game via traditional emulation during gameplay.

The update is a material delta compared to version 1.4.0. That release already allowed importing the 16 tracks from Mario Kart 64 from the user's legitimate files. Now, however, the integration includes classic items such as shells, bananas, mushrooms, Lightning, Star, and Boo. The feature is still experimental.

Road Rash 64 Recompiled 1.4.2 gets Mario Kart 64 items

The most curious feature of version 1.4.2 expands the importer introduced previously. The player can use their own compatible copy of Mario Kart 64 to locally generate the tracks and, now, enable items inspired by Nintendo's game within those imported races.

According to the official notes, the list includes shells, bananas, mushrooms, Lightning, Star, and Boo, among other items. A save option per race controls the system, while item swapping shares space with the weapon HUD from Road Rash 64.

Despite this, the developer does not present the feature as finished. The latest item-swapping logic, collisions, and Lightning visual effects still need broader live testing. Therefore, the feature should be treated as experimental.

Update adds bonus campaign after the ending

Besides the items, the Road Rash 64 Recompiled 1.4.2 adds the so-called Big Game Insanity. This optional chapter preserves the original campaign ending, but allows continuing past it into a series of repeatable bonus races.

Progress in this additional stage is saved. The implementation also fixes an invalid transition that could occur after the campaign. Thus, the new feature does not replace the original conclusion; it creates optional content after it.

Another change directly affects how races are presented. Now, the player can hear the engines of AI-controlled opponents and other participants, with stereo positioning and volume reduction based on distance. The audio menu has gained a separate control for the volume of these rival engines.

Online multiplayer receives new fixes

Internet multiplayer has also progressed. Version 1.4.2 fixes the movement of connected players, the ownership of remote sounds, the characters used in highlights, and synchronization after races. All participants must use version 1.4.2, which adopts protocol 65.

However, the project itself continues to classify the online mode as experimental. The documentation warns that connection, synchronization, control assignment, race completion, and longer sessions still need testing. The experimental limit reaches up to 14 participants, but this does not mean that matches of this size are validated as stable.

Port uses N64Recomp and RT64 instead of traditional emulation

The project uses N64Recomp to translate the game's machine code routines during build preparation. The distributed executable already contains this translated code. During execution, the runtime reads data from the copy provided by the player themselves.

RT64 takes care of modern graphical presentation. Among the general features of the port are 16:9 and 21:9 aspect ratios, a presentation selector between 30 and 240 FPS, increased draw distance, models at the highest available level of detail, keyboard and controller remapping, custom music, local achievements, and mod support.

This model is similar to other projects followed by Allves Games. The Conker Recompiled also uses N64Recomp and RT64. Meanwhile, GoldenEye 007 port follows a different path, based on decompiled source code.

Windows and Linux receive version 1.4.2

The release offers an x64 package for Windows and an experimental Linux x86-64 build in AppImage format. On Windows, RT64 can work with Direct3D 12 or Vulkan. On Linux, the project relies on Vulkan and still has limited hardware and gameplay coverage.

How to download and install Road Rash 64 Recompiled on Windows or Linux

  1. Download the package for your platform. The buttons below automatically track the latest public release. On Linux, the current download comes in an experimental ZIP containing the port's AppImage.

  1. Extract the entire package. On Windows, keep the executable and the ZIP files together in a writable folder. On Linux, extract the ZIP; if the execution permission is not preserved, use chmod +x RoadRash64Recompiled-x86_64.AppImage.
  2. Open the port. On Windows, run RoadRash64Recompiled.exe. On Linux, start the AppImage. The Linux build requires an x86-64 system, a functional Vulkan driver, and GLIBC 2.35 or newer.
  3. Select your ROM on first launch. Use your own legally acquired copy of Road Rash 64 USA v1.0. The project does not include the ROM. Once validated, the choice is associated with the installation for future runs.

The user needs to provide their own legally obtained copy of Road Rash 64, in the USA v1.0 version. To import tracks and items from Mario Kart 64, a compatible copy of that game is also required. The downloads do not include the games, soundtrack, or assets extracted from the imported tracks.

The developer recommends caution with the draw distance. A value of 100% can load the entire original map and significantly increase the load, especially in split-screen. The documentation suggests starting between 50% and 60%.

For now, there is no Android or iOS version of Road Rash 64 Recompiled. Release 1.4.2 is focused on x86-64 computers, with Windows as the primary platform and Linux still experimental. The project also states that AI tools were used extensively during development.
