Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, the strategy classic released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, has received a native recompilation project for Linux and Android. FFTA Recomp already runs the intro, menus, battles, and save systems in tests documented by the developer. In addition, it offers experimental widescreen to display a larger area of the scenery.

The project appeared publicly on October 9, 2026, in the james2doyle's GitHub repository. Since then, the documentation has started to include verifications on real Android devices. However, this does not yet mean that the creator has completed the entire campaign or made a ready public installer available.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance gets a native recompilation

FFTA Recomp uses the gbarecomp tool to pre-translate ARM and Thumb instructions from the original game into C++ code. Afterward, the system compiles this code for native execution on the computer. A similar initiative is the experimental PC port of Tomba! 2, which employs another recompilation framework for PlayStation.

Thus, the project does not depend on a traditional Game Boy Advance emulator during the recompiled routes. However, the tool features analysis and coverage recovery mechanisms to identify code snippets that still require translation.

According to the developer, the paths executed in the most recent checks underwent static execution tests without resorting to the interpreter. However, this finding does not equate to proof that all possibilities of the game work.

The author also maintains automated tests to compare results, detect failures, and verify the behavior of parts of the game. This way, they can identify issues before expanding compatibility.

Android port has already undergone testing on real phones

Another important update involves Android. The specific platform documentation states that the experimental version has already undergone checks on physical devices.

Among the devices mentioned are a Xiaomi Mi 11 and a device identified as Xiaomi M2102K1AC/Poco X3 Pro, both running Android 14. According to the author, the tests included startup, command recognition, and resuming the game after interruptions.

In addition, the developer documents a sequence of 15 checks to observe the saving, closing, and session resumption behavior. The reported result for the test suite was positive.

However, these procedures do not represent a full playthrough on mobile. They verify specific stability and functionality features.

Widescreen expands the visible area of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

The FFTA Recomp also includes experimental widescreen support. The project manages to expand the logical width of the Game Boy Advance image, which originally uses 240 × 160 pixels.

According to the README, the view can reach up to 448 pixels in width. Furthermore, the program allows choosing intermediate widths and adapting the presentation to the window.

The system seeks to reveal more parts of the battlefield, rather than simply stretching the original pixels. However, some interface elements and map screens maintain their own boundaries to preserve their positioning.

On Android, the project adapts the gameplay area to the phone's screen aspect ratio. In this way, it seeks to make better use of the available space on modern devices.

However, results still depend on configuration and graphical implementation. Experimental support should not be confused with an official remaster.

FFTA Recomp runs battles, menus, and saves

The repository outlines startup checks, the introduction, menus, battles, and save systems. Additionally, the developer uses execution logs to verify paths in the translated code.

The original game combines turn-based tactical combat, different character classes, and a law system that can restrict certain actions during matches.

The goal of the port is to preserve this functionality while executing the recompiled code. However, the author has not provided public proof of an entire campaign completed without failures in this implementation.

Therefore, FFTA Recomp should be treated as an experimental reverse engineering project, not as a guaranteed substitute for the original game.

Android version features on-screen controls and save support

In the mobile implementation, the developer uses a custom interface to import the game and BIOS files. The program also includes touch controls and options to manage the session.

According to the documentation, the virtual control may disappear after a period of inactivity. By touching the screen again, the buttons reappear.

In addition, the system records save files and save states in the application's own directories. This allows the user to make backups whenever they can access the files on the device.

However, these features were described for the development version. There is no guarantee that any APK found outside the repository corresponds to the code tested by the creator.

Thus, anyone intending to follow the mobile implementation should consult the repository before looking for installers. The creator publishes build and validation instructions, but does not confirm a ready public APK in the consulted documentation.

How to compile and run Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on Linux

Currently, the documented procedure involves preparing the source code on Linux. In addition, the user needs to provide their own North American ROM of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and a legitimate copy of the Game Boy Advance BIOS.

  1. Install the development requirements, including Git, Python 3.10 or higher, CMake 3.20 or higher, Ninja, SDL2 development libraries, and a GCC or Clang compiler.
  2. Download the project with its submodules from the official repository.

  1. Place your compatible ROM in the main project folder with the name game.gba.
  2. Add the legitimate BIOS dump to the path gbarecomp/bios/gba_bios.bin.
  3. Run python3 build.py to prepare the dependencies, recompile the code, and perform initial checks.

However, the package containing the game needs to be prepared by the user themselves from their legitimate files. The project also documents public builds without embedded ROMs and BIOS, intended for the subsequent import of these files.

Is there a version for Windows?

The specific project by james2doyle documents Linux and Android. Therefore, it would not be correct to announce a ready-made official package for Windows in that same implementation.

On October 11, another developer publicly presented a separate work recompiling Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for Windows. However, this is a different project, with its own implementation and compatibility, which requires an independent evaluation.

Thus, the resources or downloads from this other initiative should not be automatically attributed to the FFTA Recomp covered in this news.

Port is still under development

FFTA Recomp demonstrates the advancement of tools that recompile old games for current devices. Furthermore, the recent Android tests represent an evolution compared to the repository's initial stage.

However, the documentation does not prove full compatibility with all events in the game. Nor does it confirm a stable distribution ready for installation on any device.

Finally, the project has no official connection with Square Enix or Nintendo. Anyone who wants to follow its changes can check the commit history, tests, and developer instructions on GitHub.
