The Battlezone Recompiled 0.1.0 received its first public beta version in October 14, 2026. The independent project by wootbeer brings Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs, a Nintendo 64 game released in 2000, to Windows and Linux. Additionally, the author documented an option to run the port on the Steam Deck.
The official release 0.1.0-beta offers packages for both systems. On the other hand, it does not include the commercial game. Thus, it is necessary to provide a file extracted from a personal copy of the American Nintendo 64 edition.
Instead of running the ROM via conventional emulation, Battlezone Recompiled utilizes N64Recomp to recompile the original code and combine it with N64ModernRuntime and RT64. The resulting program is native to PC, although it relies on the user's cartridge data.
To understand the basis of the project, the following video shows the Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs original on the Nintendo 64. This is a recording from 2015, not a demonstration of the PC beta.

Meanwhile, the 2026 port mainly changes how this content is executed and presented. The author is also working on resolution, controls, and image improvements, but the version is still identified as a beta.
Battlezone Recompiled 0.1.0 brings widescreen and new filters
According to the version 0.1.0 changelogthe adaptation removes the black borders that limited the image. In addition, it introduces widescreen with the HUD positioned at the edges of the screen. The project also announces higher resolutions and frame rates than the Nintendo 64.
Another new feature is the possibility of applying CRT, scanlines, and LCD filters. While the former reproduce the appearance of old screens, the second set of options aims to make the image more flexible for current monitors. However, the changelog does not provide an FPS table per graphics card or processor.

Modern controls and local multiplayer for four players
Battlezone Recompiled 0.1.0 adopts a modern control layout as default and allows button remapping. There is also support for keyboards and current gamepads, which makes the game easier to access on computers.
Additionally, the developer added local multiplayer with up to four controllers. In a Reddit post on October 14, wootbeer stated that multiplayer worked in their tests. However, this statement does not equate to an independent stability assessment.
Saves use files compatible with the Controller Pak. Occasional crashes may generate crash_log.txt, a useful file for identifying bugs and reporting issues to the author.

In the reference capture, the radar and combat information appear over the original game image. With the port's widescreen, the developer claims to move the indicators to the edges of the field of view.
Battlezone Recompiled: downloads for Windows, Linux, and Steam Deck
The October 14 release presents two public files. The Windows package is a ZIP of approximately 16.7 MB; the Linux one comes in a TAR.GZ of approximately 12.6 MB. Both are port packages and do not include the game ROM.
The developer's README reports tests done on Windows and Linux. Furthermore, it provides instructions for Steam Deck. Even so, there is no independent confirmation of compatibility with all PC models or SteamOS configurations.

What remains to be tested and what changes compared to the original PC version
Although the series received Battlezone for PC in 1998, this initiative specifically recompiles Rise of the Black Dogs for Nintendo 64. Therefore, this is about preserving this console's edition and its particularities with modern features, rather than republishing the old Windows executable.
For the user, the main gain lies in the combination of native execution, widescreen, remappable controls, and image filters. Furthermore, the port maintains the real-time strategy concept with vehicle combat that characterizes the original game.

However, the availability of the beta does not guarantee that all missions, saves, and multiplayer modes are bug-free. The maintainer already flags its experimental state and documents its own support for Windows and Linux. Therefore, it will still be necessary to follow upcoming releases and eventual user testing.
Finally, the official Battlezone Recompiled repository gathers instructions, code, and changelog. The project is not affiliated with the brand owner and does not distribute commercial cartridge files.
