The game 2Xtreme for Mac received a first public native recompilation preview on October 9, 2026. Developed by catsandsoup, the project adapts the 1996 PlayStation extreme sports classic for Apple Silicon computers running macOS 26 or higher.

However, version 0.1.0-preview is still experimental. The , official README confirms user disc import on first launch and pause menu functionality, but does not validate a complete campaign, all circuits, or steady performance. Therefore, it is not yet a ready-to-play port from start to finish.

LongplayArchive showcases 2Xtreme in the original PlayStation NTSC version. The video contextualizes the game, but does not prove the functionality or gameplay of the experimental Mac version.

How the 2Xtreme Mac preview works

Instead of distributing Sony files, the application contains the necessary tools to locally generate an executable version from the user's legitimate disc copy. This way, the game is prepared on the Mac itself during the first run.

The package integrates a recompiler, graphics components, and the application interface. Furthermore, according to the author, it is not necessary to manually install Xcode or Homebrew to use the pre-compiled package; these tools are required only for those who decide to build the application from source code.

The README describes a menu with options for continue, image, sound, and quit. However, physical controller commands are still awaiting testing, as are button remapping, vibration, and two-player features.

What has already been verified by the developer

The author reports that the application is able to launch, verify the original disc, and prepare local files for subsequent runs. The pause menu has also undergone keyboard testing. However, this validation belongs to the creator and does not represent an independent test performed by Allves Games.

Features like true widescreen support, consistent speed throughout the campaign, and compatibility with older macOS versions remain on the development list. Therefore, we are not announcing 60 FPS or complete gameplay, even though the original game features 12 competitive tracks.

How to download the 2Xtreme preview for Mac

The public release contains the file 2Xtreme.zip, with the application for Apple Silicon. To try out the project, you need to own the original North American disc of 2Xtreme (SCUS-94508) and have a legally extracted image.

  1. Confirm that your Mac uses Apple Silicon and macOS 26 or higher. Prepare your legal copy of the game in format .cue and .bin; using .cue preserves the reference to the audio tracks.
  2. Download the latest package of 2Xtreme for macOS in the button below.

  3. Unzip the ZIP and move the file 2Xtreme.app to Applications. The application has not yet received Apple notarization.
  4. If macOS blocks the first opening, consult System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway, only after verifying that you downloaded the official file.
  5. Open the application and select the file .cue from your disk. Wait for the local preparation and check the controls documented in the project.

The permanent link above uses the official release and automatically resolves corresponding new public versions. The presence of a ZIP of approximately 75 MB was confirmed by GitHub metadata, but Allves Games neither installed nor executed the package.

The original game remains the reference

2Xtreme mixes skateboarding, snowboarding, inline skating, and cycling disciplines on tracks in different countries. Therefore, the original game images serve to present the title's visual proposal, but do not demonstrate the graphical fidelity or performance of the port on the Mac.

Other experimental recompilations have also emerged on macOS. On Allves Games, we have already reported the port of Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories for Apple Silicon and the Metroid Prime recompilation for Mac, but each project has different compatibility criteria.
