SSX 3 on PC got an experimental recompilation described as playable by developer Anders Fischer Nielsen on October 17, 2026. The project ssx3-decomp ahead-of-time converts the code of the American PlayStation 2 edition for native execution, featuring races, audio, and saves. However, compatibility was reported by the author; we have not performed independent tests.

SSX 3 on PC already has races and saves, says author

According to the official README, the game boots, plays opening videos, and allows navigating menus and competing in races. In addition, the soundtrack, effects, and memory card files work in the current implementation. The project provides a proprietary video of approximately 75 seconds featuring a race in Snow Jam; it does not prove a completed full campaign.

The code for the Emotion Engine, vector units, and IOP components undergoes translation before execution. Therefore, the project does not interpret each game instruction in real time like a conventional emulator. Even so, parts of the kernel, DMA, and timers remain modeled through emulation, and the result should not be called a complete hardware replacement.

Higher resolution, widescreen, and visual upgrade

The native renderer uses wgpu and allows 16:9 and ultrawide windows, with an adjustable field of view. According to the author, the 3D scenery adapts to the screen aspect ratio, while the interface maintains the original 4:3 composition. In addition, it is possible to use higher resolutions and replace textures.

On high refresh rate monitors, the system interpolates images between the game's frames. This can improve visual smoothness, but it does not transform the original 60 Hz logic into a 120 FPS simulation. The author also warns of an additional frame of latency when interpolation is active.

How to try out the SSX 3 project on PC

For now, the repository provides source code and compilation instructions, not a ready-to-use public installer for Windows, Linux, or macOS. Therefore, there is no confirmed game download button or pre-compiled executable. The user needs to generate the files locally from their own disc copy.

  1. Check the requirements in the official ssx3-decomp repository. The project requires Rust, bsdtar, and a GPU with Metal, Vulkan, or DirectX 12.
  2. Use an image extracted from a legitimate disc of SSX 3 (USA), SLUS-20772. Other regions are not declared as compatible.
  3. Follow the extraction and translation scripts in the README to generate the code from your copy, without sharing protected files.
  4. Compile the application with the author's instructions and launch the locally generated version.

The developer reports about 7 GB of free space for the image, generated files, and compilation. Development and testing declared took place on macOS with Apple Silicon; Linux has not been tested by the author yet, and Windows requires a POSIX shell for the initial scripts. Therefore, a simple installation cannot be guaranteed on all computers.

What is the difference compared to a PS2 emulator?

ssx3-decomp relies on local game recompilation and replaces parts of the PS2 environment with native implementations. A traditional emulator, on the other hand, aims to run various titles without individually recompiling each one. Therefore, these are different approaches, each with its own limitations and requirements.

The progress joins other projects that bring console classics to the PC, such as the Burnout 3 PC port and the adaptation of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. However, code availability does not equate to a playable package ready for all users.
