The classic Sega Rally for Android can now be played via the Port0r app, which adapts the 1995 arcade version for phones and tablets. The project uses MAME-based emulation, a custom Vulkan graphic renderer, touch controls, and display options for modern screens.

Developer jacquesdupontd released Port0r Sega Rally Android 0.1.2 on October 11, 2026. The update fixes a startup crash on some devices, while the previous version had improved performance, added support for Mali-G52/G57 GPUs, and expanded control settings.

Sega Rally comes to Android with the 1995 arcade version

The Port0r utilizes the original arcade Sega Rally Championship, which ran on the Sega Model 2 board. Therefore, this is neither the Sega Saturn edition nor Sega Rally 2.

The application adapts the game for current Android systems. In addition, it presents the sceneries through a Vulkan graphical implementation developed specifically for the project.

However, it is important to differentiate the technology used: the original arcade code continues to run through MAME-based emulation. Port0r does not constitute a static recompilation of the Sega Model 2 code. Meanwhile, the PC port of International Rally Championship utilizes native recompilation, a different approach.

The official video below shows Sega Rally running on Android. It was released alongside the initial launch of the app and demonstrates the steering, circuits, and touch-screen adapted controls.

The video can also be accessed via the original YouTube link. Meanwhile, the updated app files are available on GitHub.

Port0r uses Vulkan and dynamic resolution

One of the main differences compared to conventional execution in MAME lies in the graphical presentation. Port0r uses a Vulkan renderer to draw three-dimensional environments at higher resolutions.

In addition, the application allows you to use the device's full screen and expand the horizontal presentation area. This way, the player can make better use of phones and tablets with wide screens.

The program also offers dynamic resolution. Thus, when the hardware cannot keep up with the graphical load, the application can temporarily reduce the internal resolution to preserve fluidity.

The developer reports a test with Sega Rally running at 60 frames per second on a Xiaomi Pad 7, equipped with Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, at the screen resolution of 3200 × 2136.

However, this result belongs to the device tested by the author. Therefore, it does not mean that any Android phone will be able to maintain 60 FPS at the maximum resolution.

The player can also adjust sharpness, visual quality, and presentation rate. In addition, the 4:3 aspect ratio option allows recovering a framing closer to the original arcade machine.

Update 0.1.2 fixes crash on Android 16

Version 0.1.2 resolves a startup issue reported by users of certain devices. According to the official notes, the application could get stuck on the logo screen.

One of the reports involved the Galaxy Z Fold 5 with Android 16 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The developer identified a relationship with the graphics driver shader cache.

Now, the program clears this cache during startup. Thus, it seeks to prevent the user from having to force close the application and clear temporary data manually.

However, the fix does not prove universal compatibility with all Android 16 devices. The developer is still requesting reports from different handsets.

Previous version improved performance and Mali GPU support

Port0r Android 0.1.2 also gathers the changes from version 0.1.1. Among them is an execution optimization that reduces the work performed by the processor, without altering the image or audio intended by the project.

In addition, the developer restored reflections and windows of other vehicles, fixing visual details that were not appearing correctly.

Another important change is the support for Mali-G52 and Mali-G57 GPUs, present in certain Android devices and handheld consoles.

According to the author, these devices could close the application during startup. Version 0.1.1 introduced adjustments to allow its execution.

On the other hand, operation still depends on the Vulkan driver and the characteristics of each GPU. Therefore, older phones may experience freezes or require reduced graphics settings.

Sega Rally Android features a virtual steering wheel and motion controls

Port0r offers different ways to control the cars without relying on a gamepad. The first uses touch-sensitive controls on the screen.

The player can slide their finger to adjust steering, use the virtual acceleration and braking pedals, and shift gears using the available buttons.

In addition, it is possible to drive by moving the device itself. The app allows you to tilt or rotate the phone as if it were a steering wheel.

The developer also added options for sensitivity, dead zone, smoothing, and steering calibration. This way, the user can adapt the controls to how they hold the device.

In update 0.1.1, the controls received new icons. In addition, progressive acceleration now works in all compatible steering modes.

Those who prefer a physical controller can also use Bluetooth or USB gamepads. The app recognizes analog inputs, triggers, and configurable buttons.

Furthermore, the virtual controls automatically disappear when the player uses a compatible controller. They reappear when the screen is touched.

Sega Rally Android offers HD textures and Discord leaderboards

The application also supports an optional HD texture pack created by the community. According to the developer, the program identifies the file when it is available in the device's storage.

In addition, the user can experiment with different image styles, including black-and-white, nighttime, and comic book-like options.

Another feature allows sharing race times on a leaderboard hosted on the project's Discord. However, this does not mean the application offers online multiplayer matches.

The shared results depend on the player's confirmation. Therefore, the use of the leaderboard remains separate from the local execution of the game.

How to download and install Sega Rally for Android 0.1.2

The developer provides the updated APK for free on the official GitHub page. However, the application does not include the commercial ROM of Sega Rally Championship.

To run it, the user must have the legitimate arcade files compatible with MAME 0.289, identified as srallyc.zip and segabill.zip.

  1. Download the official file Port0r-SegaRally-Android-v0.1.2.apk using the button below.

  1. Open the APK on your phone or tablet and authorize the installation via the browser or file manager used, after verifying the source.
  2. Copy the files srallyc.zip and segabill.zip from your own compatible arcade copy to the Downloads folder, without unzipping them.
  3. Open the application Port0r: Rally.
  4. On first launch, grant the file access requested by the application, considering that it asks for broad access to locate the game data.
  5. Wait for file verification. If any file is missing or incompatible, the application will display a message upon startup.
  6. When the game starts, open the settings and choose your desired resolution, control type, and graphical presentation.

The official APK is approximately 85.6 MB. It requires Android 8 or higher and a GPU with Vulkan support.

The file also has a SHA-256 verification provided by the developer in the same release. Therefore, the user can check the integrity of the download before installation.

Port0r also brings Sega Rally to Linux, Mac and virtual reality

The Port0r project has other standalone versions. Among them are applications for Linux and Steam Deck, Macs with Apple Silicon and Meta Quest devices.

However, these platforms use their own packages and receive different updates. Therefore, version 0.1.2 in this article specifically corresponds to Android.

In addition, the documentation states that the Linux and Mac versions have particular resolution, controls and gameplay recording features.

Meanwhile, the Meta Quest application works with stereoscopic virtual reality. Therefore, it should not be confused with the APK intended for regular Android phones.

Port0r still has compatibility limitations

According to the developer, the Android version was tested primarily on a Xiaomi Pad 7. However, the project continues to receive reports of working on other phones, tablets, and handheld consoles.

In addition, support for physical racing wheels is not yet fully adjusted on Android. Although certain devices are recognized, their controls may not provide the expected experience.

Therefore, anyone encountering issues should consult the official installation and troubleshooting guide.

Port0r is an independent project, with no official affiliation with Sega. Finally, the application allows revisiting the 1995 Sega Rally Championship arcade on current Android devices, provided the player supplies their own compatible files.
