It is undeniable that, at first, Cyberpunk 2077 did not surprise in the way everyone expected. Even so, this did not prevent the game's commercial success. The game's launch problems compromised CD Projekt Red's reputation. According to a new report from market research firm DFC Intelligence, all of this could have been avoided if there had been better work in basic marketing and public relations.
Even though the poor performance of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One is subject to some adjustments, in addition to the necessary fixes in the PC version, CD Projekt Red itself will need a major rework in its quest to regain the community's trust.
In addition to developing, CD Projekt Red also acts as the publisher of its games, and since Cyberpunk 2077 was released, the company's future has been on a questionable path.
"The company could become an acquisition candidate..."
"Cyberpunk 2077 could have benefited from being published by a larger company." states DFC Intelligence
DFC goes even further and mentions that, before buying Bethesda, Microsoft had plans to acquire CD Projekt Red, which gained global headlines by becoming the most valuable gaming company in Europe in early 2020.
"The main lesson to be learned from Cyberpunk 2077 is that the role of the publisher in managing distribution, marketing, and public relations is still important." suggests DFC
Even with all the aggravating factors of the Cyberpunk 2077 launch, the developer still has a net value similar to that of Ubisoft and ZeniMax Media (parent company of Bethesda).
Although DFC Intelligence (the institution responsible for
providing market research reports, forecasting services, and consulting for the global video game and digital entertainment industry) has confirmed credibility, there is no confirmation regarding the acquisition of CD Projekt Red by any major publisher.
Cyberpunk 2077 continues to sell satisfactorily well, reaching the milestone of 13 million copies as of December 20th of last year. Many people are waiting for the patch updates to be released, so the sales number could still grow considerably.
