SoulSilver recompilation is the focus of ssrecomp, a project that gained a public version 0.2.0 on October 14, 2026. The software adapts Pokémon SoulSilver for a single screen on PC, featuring a widescreen aspect ratio, gamepad controls, and an interface to prepare the build.

However, the project does not yet offer a ready-to-play installer. The repository of ClickingMaster on GitHub makes source code and instructions available. To run the game, the user needs a ROM of the North American version obtained from their own cartridge.

How SoulSilver recompilation works on PC

ssrecomp combines two technologies. First, it statically recompiles the game's ARM9 code into C++. Additionally, it incorporates the melonDS emulator core to reproduce the Nintendo DS hardware, including graphics, sound, cartridge, save memory, and ARM7.

Therefore, it is not a fully emulation-independent port. The hybrid solution takes advantage of recompiled code and emulated components to run the original Nintendo DS edition.

During exploration, the project reorganizes the interface to use a single screen. Thus, the game world occupies the main area, while menus and prompts appear contextually. The author also shows the Route 29 region in a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Single screen, battles and 60 FPS option

During battles, the commands originally shown on the touch screen appear in a bar at the bottom. This way, the player can choose attacks and items using a traditional controller, without manually switching between the two screens.

In addition, the interface allows changing layouts, saving and loading states, and using keyboard or gamepad shortcuts. The menu offers a 60 FPS option for the 3D image, according to the documentation. However, the game maintains its original logic, and the feature does not equate to an independent performance benchmark.

The author also describes visual limitations of widescreen. Certain 2D effects do not extend beyond the original area, while objects may appear differently at the edges. Therefore, the experience may still vary depending on the scene.

How to compile ssrecomp 0.2.0

The version 0.2.0 on GitHub distributes the source code, but does not provide an installable executable. The documentation outlines the following process:

  1. Obtain the source code from the official repository and extract the files.
  2. Prepare the build environment indicated in the README, with Python, CMake, Ninja, and necessary libraries.
  3. Have a ROM .nds of the North American edition of Pokémon SoulSilver, extracted legally from its cartridge.
  4. Run python3 ssrecomp_setup.py, select the ROM and choose Build.
  5. After compilation, use the option Play to start the game.

According to the developer, the first build can take 20 to 40 minutes. On Linux, the README provides specific commands for Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, and immutable distributions. The procedure on Windows uses MSYS2 and has not yet undergone tests declared by the author.

It is important to distinguish the code package from a finished game: neither the ROM nor the protected files of Pokémon SoulSilver accompany the project. Also, as of this check, there is no official binary package in releases 0.1.0 and 0.2.0. Therefore, there is no installer download button to offer.

Experimental project and next steps

The creator published the initiative in the community r/recomps and is looking for people to test the software. The features mentioned here come from the README and the author's screenshots; they do not represent independent tests by Allves Games.

Meanwhile, other Pokémon recompilation projects are advancing along different paths. Allves Games also followed the changes in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team port and the the changes in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team port.
