One of the greatest gaming stories of the past decade is the development and definitive completion of The Last Guardian, a game that defied all odds by escaping development hell and finally being released in December 2016. Although the game received acclaim, much like director Fumito Ueda 's Shadow of The Colossus, the developer genDESIGN had entered yet another "hiatus" to work on their next project. After more than five years since the release of The Last Guardian, a New Year's teaser indicates that the team is preparing to announce their next game. The developer genDESIGN was founded in 2014 by director Shadow of The Colossus, during the long development of The Last Guardian, which is made up of many of the employees who worked at Japan Studio's Team Ico during the production of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus on the PlayStation 2. After two years, the developer managed to complete the former PlayStation 3 title, releasing it on the PS4 in December 2016. After that, it appears the company cut ties with Sony. The last news published to fans of the games by genDESIGN dates back to March 2020, when it was revealed that the studio, along with the developer Remedy Entertainment (from the game Control) and the Playdead (from the game Inside), had signed an agreement with Epic Games to publish their next game as a multiplatform title, with the two companies splitting the game's profits evenly, this being a surprisingly robust share for genDESIGN, given Epic's power in the modern gaming industry. In late 2020, genDESIGN released a Christmas greeting card featuring characters from Ico , Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian, but also hinted at the studio's next game. On New Year's Eve 2022, the studio's Twitter account published a post seemingly written by Ueda himself, stating:
"Happy New Year. In 2022, I'll do my best to make some new announcements [...]"
The message is followed by a link to job listings at genDESIGN and features art of a tiger to celebrate the new year. Although it is easy to assume that this post is an instant confirmation that a new game from Allves Games genDESIGN will be announced this year, it is recommended that we take this with a small "grain of salt", given the time it The Last Guardian took to release. What is known about the new project is that it may somehow reference "Beauty and the Beast ". This will be the studio's first multiplatform title, which means it will likely be released on Nintendo and Xbox platforms, as well as PlayStation, and could possibly use Epic's Unreal Engine 5, given the studio's partnership with the publisher. The Last Guardian is available now, exclusively for PlayStation 4. The game is also included as part of the PlayStation Plus Collection on PS5. Source: GameRant
